Online Casino Developments Around the World

If you look at the headquarters of the online casinos you are playing in, you'll realize that they are usually located in the islands of the Caribbean Sea. Countries like Antigua and Barbuda have allowed online gambling establishments to set up shop within their territories. However, more and more countries outside the Caribbean are already setting up, or are planning to set up, online casinos within their jurisdictions. This, despite the recent crackdown on online casinos in the United States.

These countries are beginning to realize the enormous benefits and advantages of licensing and legalizing online casinos. Aside from the taxes and licensing fees obtained from these businesses, online casinos also pour in millions of dollars into the local economy in the form of jobs. Take for example, Antigua and Barbuda, where a third of the active labor force is employed in the gambling sector.

In the United Kingdom, the government is planning to pass a law that may legalize the online gambling industry. The bill will encourage the construction of more casinos all over the country and is supported by majority of British voters. Many observers think that this law, if passed, will encourage online casinos to base their operations in the U.K.

On the other side of the English Channel, the French spend twice as much money on gambling as the British, and also play three times longer. A loophole in European Union regulations that restricts casino gambling to government-run operations has allowed the French to continue gambling online. It was believed that the high demand for broadband Internet access was caused by the rise in popularity of online gambling.

On the world's biggest continent, online gambling is on a slow, but steady, rise. For instance, the Chinese play the 4,000 year old game of mahjong, and nearly half of Chinese polled in a recent survey admit that they play the game for money. In fact, mahjong is already being offered in some online casinos.

The Japanese government is also planning to legalize online gambling in the country. The move is supported by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and efforts are underway to make online casinos a major player in the Japanese economy. If the move succeeds, Japan may well become one of the world's biggest markets for online casinos.

In Australia, the government is also on its way to formally allow online casinos, following its decision to grant an online casino a license to build a customer support center in Tasmania. About 300 jobs are expected to be created in the cash-strapped state.

Similar moves are underway in other countries and this could mean a rapid increase of online gamblers from areas not normally known as markets for the online gambling industry. These areas will also stand to benefit from taxes and jobs provided by the online casinos. It's a win-win situation that has many governments salivating at the revenue prospects, and a losing proposition for the U.S. government, and other entities opposing online gambling.
