Delay for Casino Facility Called by Maine Gambling Control Board

Maine Gambling Control Board members are seeking for a delay before any casino-style facilities are approved in the state was the decison made in a meeting Friday, August 11 in Maine.

In a regular monthly meeting on Friday, August 11, the expansion of gambling is put on hold until the board has gathered enough detailed information "to assure an accurate assessment of the effect of gaming, both tangible and intangible, on the people, the social fabric, and the business infrastructure of Maine."

This resolution came just after nine months since the Penn National Gaming Inc. opened its first and only slot machine facility in the state, the Hollywood Slots at Bangor.

Peter Danton, board member said, "I support a moratorium until we know where we are going in the state Maine."

Danton and other board members Larry Hall and Michael Peters have voted in line for the resolution but Cushing Samp opposed, while Chairman George McHale abstained.

At Friday's meeting the agenda included the approval of a license for a one-year renewal for Hollywood Slots which followed a public hearing. Hollywood Slots opened last November that houses 475 slot machines on Main Street.

In Pennsylvania, Penn National is planning to open a bigger permanent gambling complex down the street by the year 2008 with 1,000 slots that the company is authorized to operate.
